About us here at Star Dreme

Writing an about us page is the most difficult thing for me (Jane) I think.   And so this is an extremely honest bit about us that I hope will give you an insight into the team behind Star Dreme who aim to create beautiful things you will love and cherish.  Our hopes are these beautiful things will become your family heirlooms of the future.

Jane and Lee are behind Star Dreme.  Lee has lived and breathed typography for over 30 years.  Trained as a graphic designer originally and has most loved creating anything that needed letterform of some description.  

I love everything beautiful especially the tactile part of it, the shine and sparkle!  I ran my own wedding stationery company many years ago for a time.  I stopped to pursue an alternative career but have always dreamed of returning to it.  And this is where I am now.  I have to pinch myself sometimes!   Using an old and traditional process to create beautiful, handmade tactile pieces of beauty that are relevant in our modern world.

We use letterpress, both with ink and foil in our printed products.   Lovely old machines that have a magic and wisdom about them.  Our ink letterpress press is called Mable and our foiling letterpress beauty is named Nellie.  These lovely presses create impressions into paper that you can feel.  Their official description are 'platen presses'.  This is different to modern printing processes where letters are on the surface of the paper.  And every piece of paper that we press, we both feel the magic and wonder of.   Sappy though that might sound, it is really true.

Carbon Footprint Work: as a company using lots of paper we are keenly eco-conscious and constantly reviewing all our processes.  Choosing suppliers is a careful and research heavy occupation for us!  The range of papers we use is quite broad from 100% cotton papers (usually made from recycled cotton or parts of cotton plants that can't be used for anything else) to FSC certified papers.  Our torn edge papers are classed as vegan and made from 100% recycled cotton rag.  Proudly part of the Ecologi climate action we plant one tree for every order we receive through this website as part of our carbon offset programme.

How do I know if I like letterpress printing?
This is such a good question.  Letterpress printing is not remembered sadly, by many anymore.   You really need to feel and touch it to see what we are talking about.   With this in mind we are creating postcards that we can send out, free of charge, so you can see what it is!   Please do use the contact form to get yours!
